Attendance is important!

Regular attendance is a key to school success. We emphasize the importance of regular and prompt school attendance simply because it does make a difference. When your child is absent from school, they miss more than the day’s lessons. Class discussions can be just as valuable.

If your child is truly sick, they should stay home of course. But missing school for any other reason becomes a bad habit. Research indicates students who have poor attendance in the elementary years are much more likely to drop out of high school later.

Tardies & Early Pick-up

School is your child’s work world and should be treated as the most important thing he or she does during the week! Therefore, it is important that your child arrive on time and stay until the dismissal bell each day.

  • If your child arrives after the first bell, please walk them to the office to pick up a “tardy slip.” This will guarantee that they are not counted absent. You may still receive a phone call from ParentLink, our automated attendance system.
  • We do understand that there are times when your child must be picked up early for an important appointment. You may be asked to provide written documentation of this visit.

APS Attendance Policy

On time, daily attendance is mandatory for all students. The APS district goal is 95% attendance for all students in each grading period. This means no more than 4.5 absences per student, per semester, is acceptable.

Whenever a student is going to be absent from school, the parent or guardian must notify the school each day that the child will be absent.

The following reasons will be excused, with appropriate documentation:

  • Illness
  • Doctor's appointment
  • Death in the family
  • Religious commitment
  • Family emergency
  • Diagnostic testing

Lew Wallace E.S. will make a good faith effort to contact the parent or guardian after 3 consecutive days of absence.

It is expected that parents will limit student vacations to periods of time when school is not in session. Family vacations outside of normally scheduled breaks will be considered unexcused absences.

Students with excessive absences will be referred to the Children’s Court Liaison.
